Journal for May 20th…the Vine

5:28 AM

Psalm 80

Lord, what a perfect passage for today - considering the news yesterday. Our president appears to be against Israel…which doesn't bode so well for our country. The majority of Americans, Lord, and certainly discerning Christians in the country are absolutely for Israel.

You are the God that is over all things and nothing is without Your consent. What the U.S. needs first, Lord, are believers that will start living the faith they proclaim. Be Jesus to their neighbors and friends; share the gospel; pray for Israel.

You brought Israel out of Egypt and planted her like a vine in a barren place. She became the shade and resources for the region v8-11; now people snipe at her and pick her fruit; even want to destroy her v12-13; she is at strife with her neighbors v6 (that's an understatement) and her enemies make fun of her. The U.S. is getting close to the same treatment, too.

But You, Lord of hosts, please return. Take care of Your vine, Israel v14. I pray they will not turn away from You v18, that You would revive them, and they will call on Your name. Please look down with favor and save Israel v19.

I pray the same for the U.S. If Your people, who are called by Your Name, would humble themselves, seek Your face, pray, and turn from their sins, then I know You would hear from heaven, forgive their sin and heal the land. So I pray today that Christians would worship and adore You then lay their lives before You. Restore Your people -- in Israel, in America, and anywhere in the world that people profess Jesus as their Lord.

At the cross, at the cross, where I first saw the light; and the burden of my heart rolled away. It was there by faith, I received my sight, and now I am happy all the day! You are my Vine, of which I am just a branch.

And here, at my ground zero of spiritual warfare, please fill me with Your Spirit today. Forgive my past failures and lost battles. The victory is won in spite of me! Praise the Lord! Thank You, Jesus, for all You've done for me. Hedge in my family and church in the Name of Jesus Christ, the risen Son of God, and by the power of His blood.

Be Lord today. I am second.

Journal for May 19th…Ransom-Payer

5:44 AM

Psalm 49

Lord, I certainly want to praise You today for the ransom You provided for me. I also thank You for making the Truth known to me…for letting me know about Jesus and giving me the capacity to believe in Him.

People can trust in their wealth and riches v6 but it will get them no where with You. Now, You've certainly been good to me. There have been tough times and good times economically, but in the big scheme of things I've been blessed and blessed and blessed. I know that wealth and riches will not pay the ransom You demand v11; only You are able to provide the adequate ransom. Thank You, thank You, for that!

When we die, all of our assets, are left behind v17…we can't take any of it with us. Frankly, Lord, when I think of Heaven, why would anyone want to take what they have now to that beautiful and marvelous place. The best we could possess here on this fallen earth would quickly prove inferior to what You have there. Eye has not seen what You have in store for those that love You. It's a benefit of the ransom….the ransom You paid.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for the great and terrible sacrifice You paid for my sins. Mercy there was great and grace was free; pardon there was multiplied to me; there my burdened soul found liberty -- at Calvary!

In the Name of the Lord, Jesus Christ, and the power of His divine blood, I ask for a hedge of protection around my family today. Each of us need Your help in the battle. I pray for my church family -- some are sick, some are facing difficulties and adversity, some are walking through the valley of the shadow of death, others face trials I know not of -- hedge them in, too. Our nation's leaders need divine wisdom, Lord, but seem to reject it; but I pray for them anyway. Please, God, do bless America. You paid the ransom for every single person in this country and You love them all.

To my Ransom-Payer I say thank You. Walk with me; talk with me; nudge me when necessary. I want You to be first. I want to be second.

Journal for May 18th…The Goal

5:37 AM

Philippians 3

Lord, it's clear from Your Word that You are "goal-oriented". Creation starts out with You having a plan and a design for the world. You spoke and it came into being. Your goal was accomplished. Jesus made it clear why He came to earth: "to seek and save the lost" and "to give My life as a ransom". He was clearly goal-oriented and He got it done.

Paul was the same way v10. He said that his goal was to know Christ and the power His resurrection… "to know Christ" in a personal, experiential, intimate way. It was what drove Him each day. We can have mini-goals, like eating right, looking good, feeling better, and making it through another week. But there ought to be a goal that drives our tastes, preferences, and personal desires; that determines what we study, where we work, and how we treat other people. A goal like knowing Christ.

Lord, You've had a hold of me since I was very young v12; my goal is to get a hold of You because You have taken hold of me. You reached down from eternity to this fallen world and got a hold of my life and my soul to save me for all eternity. The least I could do is get a hold of You.

One thing v13: put the past behind me and always look ahead where my future is; look ahead where God's call is on my life v14 and Jesus awaits.

A goal; take hold; one thing. Now there's a 3-point message. Think I'll use it for the Baccalaureate message this coming Sunday evening for the graduates.

For me…today…I pray in the precious and powerful Name of Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior, that You would put a strong hedge of protection around my family. Without Your help we are mere men and women fighting and losing the battle in our own strength. Hedge in my church family-may we mature and grow…numerically as well as spiritually. I pray for those men I witnessed to yesterday -- one in particular -- that they may get a hold of Jesus in their life, too.

Thank You for so much…my health, my ministry, my salvation, my family, my friends, my experiences, and Your forgiveness. Yes, for Your mercy.

Be glorified, Lord. I am second.

Journal for May 17th…Songs

5:30 AM

Psalm 47

Praise! Yes, Father, songs of praise offered up to You this morning v6. Praise to the Lord, the almighty, the King of creation! Let my soul praise Him, for He is my Rock and salvation!

Lord, You are truly awe-inspiring v2. Just Your creation is enough to give a person pause.

I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder and there proclaim, my God how great thou art!

There are even godless people that would even kill humans to protect the awesome environment You created -- they are awed by its magnitude, intricacies, and beauty. But I see a wonderful Creator behind the creation. And I know that there's a time coming when You will re-create it all…a New Heaven and New Earth! If this cursed world (because of sin) is beautiful, then the New Earth is beyond my imagination.

You are the King v2 over all the earth, and I must remember that no matter what happens, You are still seated on the throne v8. Nothing gets past You. It's all headed where You want it to go. The promise I believe and hold onto is that You have chosen my inheritance v4…and it's wonderful and eternal. And I know that anything I have, or will ever have, from You is because of Jesus Christ.

Then, along with songs of praise are songs of instruction. Thank You, Lord, for music, music of all kinds. From songs of praise to songs of instruction v7, to songs of encouragement and joy. Thank You for the gift of music. May I honor You with it today.

Be glorified today, Lord. I am trying to be second.

Journal for May 16th…His Goodness

5:42 AM

Psalm 16

Father, You are good to me. Through all the tough times and adversities, in the big scheme of things, You have always been there. You are my portion and cup of blessing v5. "Things" have never satisfied the deep longings and true needs of my life. I will praise You for the counsel and direction You have given me v7; even though I can't say I've always taken Plan A. I want to keep You in my mind always v8. My whole being is affected by Your presence: my body can rest securely, my soul is able to be glad, and my spirit rejoices because of You v9.

The boundary lines have fallen in pleasant places for me v6 --You have always brought into my life the right people v6, like my family and Christian friends, as well as ministry places--and I have had it relatively easy compared to other believers who suffer for their faith.

I simply want to thank You today for the blessings I have. It's so easy to complain about things sometimes, but the truth is that You hold for me "eternal pleasures" that I could never imagine. Thank You for being so good to me…and certainly for no merit on my part. All I have of worth came from You.

Protect me still v1, for I take refuge in You. Protect those around me that I love. Hedge us in and watch over us in the powerful Name of Jesus and His blood. Be good to us still. I can only ask that because of Your grace and loving mercy toward me and those around me.

My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought; my sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more! Even so, it is well, with my soul.

Because of Your goodness all can be well with my soul. I am second.

Journal for May 13th…Wealth

Psalm 73

Father, I want to thank You, first of all, for Your presence in my life v23,28. The fact is, even in a fallen world and tough economy, there are always the rich and famous. They parade themselves on TV and give their opinion, as if their money and deviate lifestyle make them an expert in living. But my temptation is to envy the ease in which they live v4,12. But the truth is, you give them plenty of troubles v18. It Your presence that matters…now and in eternity.

When I come close to You in worship, into Your sanctuary/temple, then I understand! It all makes sense. They are only rich in dying things. I am always with You v23. You hold me up and guide my ways v24, and one day You will take me to Heaven out of this cursed world that others love so much v24.

Help me, Lord, to desire nothing on earth but You v25. Even if my body is sick and in pain, You be the strength of my heart v26. May I always be able to tell others about You, too v28.

Thank You for my salvation…it is totally from You, no merit of my own. Your grace alone brought the solution and then made it known to my dead spirit. I owe You everything. Thank You for my family - my wife, of all the women in the world, is the one perfect fit for me! Thank You for allowing me to serve in ministry to others and to You. Forgive my failures and sins; cleanse me through Your Spirit and Word.

Put a strong hedge of protection around me, my family, and my church in the Name of Jesus Christ, the risen One. We may not be the wealthiest people by worldly measures, but we have You and we are rich.

Be first today, Lord. I am second.

Journal for May 12th…His Side

Philippians 3

Father, You are glorious -- my mind cannot even conceive Your splendor and wonder. When I first see Heaven I know that it will be profound. I imagine that the only words I will utter will be words of confession and praise. I pray that Your kingdom would come on earth as it is in Heaven.

There are many enemies of the cross…people, Lord, that are not just indifferent, but are enemies v18. Earthly things are all that matter to them but their end is destruction v19. But I don't want to be in league with those types. My citizenship is not here on earth, but in Heaven v20. I don't belong here…but I get too comfortable here sometimes. I know that one day You will come and all of us who believe will be transformed from this wasting body and fallen world to a glorious body like Yours v21. You have the power to make that happen…You rose from the dead; You rule and manage all things from Heaven; and when sin has run its course, You will return, establish Your Kingdom once and for all!

I want to be on Your side, Lord. You were on my side when You died on the cross, now I want to be noticeably on Your side….to the point that others could imitate my example v17.

That's the choice: be friends with the world or be citizens of heaven. There are so many Christians that try to be both. I pray I'm not one of them.

Lord, in the Name of Jesus Christ, and in the power of His blood, I ask for a strong hedge of protection around each member of my family today; and around my church family, many of whom are growing in You, but facing difficulties and threats from our common enemy; and a hedge around this country -- don't give up on the U.S. yet, Lord. May good and godly people bravely step up and lead the congress and make a difference for truth and what is right.

Help me live on Your side today -- I want to be an asset to the Kingdom today, not a liability.

Song:Let others see Jesus in You; let others see Jesus in You. Keep telling the story, be faithful and true; Let others see Jesus in You.

Journal for May 11th…Maturity

5:34 AM

Philippians 3

Father, again today You, and You alone, are worthy of glory and praise. It has always been that way…it will always be that, too. There is none like You; no one else could touch my heart like You do; I could search for all eternity long and find there is none like You! You are too wonderful for my understanding, but I know this: You love me and gave Your Son to ransom me from this fallen world and my own wretched sin! Praise to God for that!

"Darril, a sign of spiritual maturity is the pursuit of My heavenly call in Christ v14,15. You can tell who is growing spiritually by their pursuits, by what's important to them. I will reveal these things to you if you will pursue Me. Anyway, Darril, You may not know all the truth right now -- certainly not as much as you will eventually -- but live up to what You already have attained v15,16." Thank You, Lord, for Your personal affirmation. You’re right, I see so many Christians engaging in religious and theological discussions, but they aren't living up to the truth they already know! I don't ever what to be that way…knowing Scripture but not applying it. I want to be a doer and not a hearer only.

Psalm 11

Lord, our foundations are being destroyed v3. The foundation of dependence upon You; the foundation of family; the foundation of liberty and freedom; the foundation of self-reliance. And when the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? We are in trouble.

What's that You say? "In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world!" That's right, on the cross You started the process of making all things new. And for me, it was when I asked You for forgive my sins and come into life for ever and ever. "Yes, v4 I am in my holy Temple; I will not be moved; and in the end I will accomplish my will. Be of good cheer, my child."

Thank You, Lord, for encouragement. Be glorified today -- where You want and how You want!

Journal for May 10th…Knowing Him

5:38 AM

Philippians 3

Father, today I thank You for another opportunity to praise You, grow in You, and know You. My goal, v10 is to know You. Help me abide in You and You in me (John15:5) that I may know You better. You must start, please, by forgiving my sins and cleansing me with Your Holy Spirit and Your Word. My thoughts are constantly drawn to worldly things -- it's a distraction game we play: I try to think on Godly things and the world tries to distract me. But deep down I want to know You and the power of Your resurrection living through me.

I have never suffered much for being a believer. This fallen world has suffering enough of its own. But there are believers around the world today, Egypt and Syria come to mind, that are fellowshipping with Your suffering v10, because they are engaged in the spiritual battle. I want to pray for believers everywhere today that put their lives and family's on the line for their faith.

You got a hold of me one day, Lord. One day, for reasons beyond my comprehension, You got a hold of my life v12. There are/were better prospects than me, but You got a hold of me. Song: Jesus got a hold of life and He won't let me go; Jesus got into my heart, He got into my soul…. Now, I want to get of hold of what Your purpose is for me.

Help me to forget what is behind and always reach for what is ahead v13. For I know that with You, the best is always ahead!Thank You, Lord, for letting me know You.

Journal for May 9th…Relationship

Philippians 3

Father, I rejoice in the blessings that mine. Most of all knowing Christ. I want to rejoice in the Lord all day v1. As a matter of fact, I want to boast about Jesus to others v3. I don't mind telling people what You've done for me.

Mostly I am still taken back by the privilege of know Jesus, my God. Knowing You -- having an intimate, personal relationship with You -- surpasses anything of value in the world v8. Nothing I could experience, collect, or own in the world matches the supreme worth of just knowing Jesus Christ. O yes, it's a battle sometimes (all the time) … my humanity is drawn to the world and the things in it. I would rather have Christ and be found in You v9.

Sunday was a great day, Lord, and I thank You for it. Worship, baptisms, infant dedications, being with my family, etc. But this week will require more of You each day. I want to draw closer to You; please draw close to me.

Thank You for the righteousness I have through faith in Christ -- not of my own doing, but completely and wholely from You…the righteousness of God based on faith v9. And I certainly do believe, but help strengthen my faith.

He walks with me and He talks with me; and He tells me I am His own. And the joy we share as we tarry there … none other has ever known.

Journal for May 6th…Faithful Love

5:38 AM

Psalm 6

Father, the amazing thing is that You even accept my prayers at all v9. The only explanation is Your faithful love v4. You have helped me many times -- none which I deserved; and I believe there is always someone else that can take my place, even do it better, yet You are faithful to me and allow me to serve You. I want to praise You today for Your faithful love. You set the bar for us to follow. You are loving, forgiving, and compassionate toward us…even when we mess up, fail, sin and falter. You show me that I should do the same for other people, especially of the household of faith, who mess up, fail sin and falter.

Psalm 36

Your faithful love reaches to the heavens v5 and Your righteousness stands tall and permanent like the mountains v6; Your judgements are like the deepest sea -- I don't understand why and how You do many of the things You do. Like, apart from Your love for me, there's no reason to save me. I have nothing to offer that You didn't give me. But somewhere in Your "judgement" You saved me, then called me into Your service.

You are the Light of the world…at least the Light of me! Only in Your light am I able to see light in the darkness of this present world v9.

Spread Your faithful love over me, over my family, over my church, over this nation. Give is another day, another chance, to make some difference for the Kingdom of God. Your very nature is faithfulness and I praise You for it.

Father, I adore You; lay my life before You; how I love You. Jesus, I adore You; lay my life before You; how I love You. Worthy, worthy, worthy is the Lord God almighty, who was and is, and is to come!

Journal for May 5th…Presence

5:44 AM

Psalm 65

You, Lord, are definitely the God of my salvation v5. You answer me in Your righteousness even though I don't always understand why and how You answer. Nevertheless, Your works are awe-inspiring…from creation itself to my salvation to Your daily presence. Praise is rightfully Yours, God v1. I pray that you'll help me fulfill my vows to You from now on.

Only You can atone for my rebellions v3, and You do this through the blood of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

I look forward to Heaven, Lord. I know I will be more than satisfied with Your house and holiness of Your temple v4, the New Jerusalem. But even now You are One who hears prayer v2. Millions bow every day to gods that cannot hear, heal or help. But You hear me. Thank You for hearing my whining as well as other prayers. Your compassion is deep.

In a fallen world of pain, starvation, mean people, evil and cruelty the believer knows that Your ways overflow with plenty v11. You provide what we need; and as for me, I have been greatly blessed with stuff. Mostly I am blessed with the family I've been given; and I thank You for putting me into ministry 1Tim; I thank You for a church family that cares, and in which I see You move; I thank You for my health (although I have a few aches and pains this morning…at least I have a body that can feel, walk, and serve).

Jesus, I just want to thank You for being so personal…for walking and talking with me throughout the day. I need someone like You to bounce ideas off of…someone who overlooks the little dumb things and glosses over my frailties…and then gives me Your own thoughts. Fill me with Your Spirit, today, Lord Jesus. Help me to be second today.

Journal for May 4th…Dialogue

5:39 AM

(Note: Sometimes in my prayers and journals I write as if the Lord and I are having a dialogue. His impressions are written as if He were speaking to me. His Words are in quote marks)

Psalm 34

I will praise the Lord at all times v1…at least that's what I want to do, Father. The world is not a friendly place for anyone, least of all believers, so we get distracted by adversity. You promised many adversities would come v19, but that You would stay close. I need Your Spirit to help me "turn away from evil and do what is good" v14, and to keep my tongue from evil, too v13.

Thank You, Lord, that Your angel encamps around me, for I respect and honor You as Lord and King v7. You are wonderful to me and I wish that others would/could know You intimately and personally like I do. If they would only try and get a taste of what it's like to know the One that loves them so much v8. Lord, today there are people that are sad and brokenhearted; their spirit is crushed from the circumstances they endure; or the loss of a loved one, or the betrayal of a friend… if they only knew that You stood by to embrace them and love them. You are especially near those that are hurting v18.

"Darril, if you seek Me, I will answer You…in My time, of course, and in my way; but I will answer You. I answered You when You called on me for salvation, and so many other times. My love for You is not diminished since then." Thank You, Father for hearing me. Forgive the sins and disappointments that obstruct our relationship. "Done." Cleanse me today with Your Word and fill me with Your Spirit. "Stay in My Word, it's my Spirit's power in you." Thank You for all You have done, and will do, in my life. It is Yours to take or use as You see fit. Thank You for Jesus and what was accomplished through Him on the cross. I will never forget it. "I love you, too."

In the Name of Jesus and the power of His blood, please put a strong hedge of protection around me, my family, my church, Your people and all the leaders in our nation that claim You as Savior. I look forward to eternity apart from this cursed world; but one thing I have is You in the midst of this fallen world…for that I am grateful. "I will be You until the end of the age." Yes, I remember You promised that. I believe it, too. May Jesus Christ be praised!

First Journal Entry for May 03…His Faithful Love

5:48 AM

Father, today I ask that Your faithful love would rest on me 22, for I put my hope in You. Anyone, anything else would disappoint -- especially me -- but You are faithful in Your love and compassion for me. I will depend on Your faithful love to deliver me and watch over me 18,19.

I begin my day with praise of Your overwhelming power and genius. Everything came into being because You spoke and it was 9. So I know a word from You is all it takes and it's done…whatever it is. Throughout the day I will sing and hum praises to You 3 while Your work continues in my life 4 to whatever end You decide. I need Your counsel 11 and truly want to know Your plans for me. I already know Your marvelous plans about salvation (praise You for that alone) and about Heaven!, but day to day, in what are just small things to You, I need Your counsel.

Without a doubt, Lord, You are in charge. I do not know why some things take the course they do, but I know You have the end result.

Protect me with Your armor today, Lord. The enemy so easily infiltrates my life and my thoughts. Thank You for my salvation, but give me the mind of Christ; protect my heart from other loves and preferences - be first and make me second; fill me with Your Spirit so that I will be honest with You and myself, and help live in integrity; provide opportunities for me to share or care today; increase my faith, even that comes from You; and make the Word, Your Word, strong in me today…teach me and fire me up with Your Word. Protect my family in the Name of Jesus and the power of His blood; the same for my friends, my church, and our nation. And Lord, let there be a spiritual awakening in our hearts and lives.

Journal for May 2…Glad

5:38 AM

Psalm 32

Even now, Lord, as I read Your Word and converse with You, it is raining outside and I hear the thunder rolling in the distance. We need the rain, but more than that, we need You. Father, I come to You to begin this day in Jesus' Name. I have no standing before You except what You have given me by grace. I am in Your presence today by invitation only. Had it not been for Jesus and the heavy price He paid for me, I would be lost and separated forever. My heart is glad because of Your mercy.

Happy is the one (me) whose transgression is forgiven, who sin is covered v1. I confess my sins to You -- how foolish it would be to try and hide them. But in my spirit I am open before You and acknowledge my transgressions v2. The amazing thing is that You do not charge me any longer with sin…You charged Jesus! I confess my sins and You take away the guilt!v5 It's not fair, it's not logical, but it's what You did through Jesus Christ.

This is not about my sin, it's about Your grace; Your Mercy; and Your concern and love for me.

What I pray for today, in the Name of Jesus, is for Your instruction v8. Show me the way to go. Keep Your eye on me and give me counsel. Don't keep Your will from me. You promised to do this. My hearing is not so good sometimes and I am not on Your frequency, but I have Your Spirit within me, so help my infirmity (inability to pray rightly) Rom.8:28, and give me counsel in my spirit.

I will be glad in the Lord today…I will rejoice v11. Even in difficult and trying times You are still worthy of praise and glory! My mistakes and misjudgments, while giving my enemies fodder to accuse me, have never diminished Your glory one bit. I will shout for joy v11. I am glad, so very glad, that Your mercy found me.

Be glorified today, Lord…in my family; in Your church; in my life; in this nation; in the lives of our elected officials. Let the revival start right here, in me.

Journal for April 29th…No Comparison

5:44 AM

Psalm 89

God, there is no one -- not in heaven or on earth -- that compares with You 6. If all the angels, bright and glorious surrounded You, they would still pale in comparison 7. There is just no one like You. Perhaps it is Your faithfulness that sets You apart 8, or it could be the wonders of creation itself, the heavens and the earth are Yours. In fact, You created them! They were Your idea!

So was salvation for those of us who rebelled against You; who have sinned; who have gone our own way. Happy are the people that have found Your salvation and the result is their praise; they know the joyful shout! 15 They walk in the light of Your presence; I am so grateful for Your presence. In fact, I rejoice in Your Name -- who You are and what You have done -- all day long 16.

It is true, my protection, not just in this life, but in eternity to come is You. 18 You are like a shield to me, as undeserving as I am. Anything I have comes from You and is a result of Your righteousness, not mine; Your merit, nothing I have done; the death and blood of Jesus Christ, not my flawed offerings.

May the Lord be praised forever. Amen and amen. 52

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul; thank You, Lord, for making me whole; thank You, Lord, for giving to me, thy great salvation so rich and free.

In my heart there rings a melody of love. Yes, You are the love song I will sing forever!

There is none like You; no one else could touch my heart like You do. I could search for all eternity long and find there is none like You!

Journal for April 28th…Trust

5:42 AM

Psalm 28

May the Lord be praised, for he has heard the sound of my pleading. You always hear me, even though sometimes You are silent to me v6. You are my strength in every way, and a shield that protects me -- often when I make some really dumb choices. Bottom line is, my heart trusts in You v7. Sometimes my mind tries to sort things out and fails in the area of faith; and sometimes I am impatient and move ahead before You signal me to; but deep down inside of me my heart trusts in You. I believe the whole story: You came, You died for me; You rose again; You will return (this is where the mind says "oh, yeah, it's been so long, are you sure?", but my heart trusts in You); and I have bought into the whole thing about a New Heaven and a new Earth someday…I'm in, hook, line and sinker! I believe it, and You know I believe it. Therefore, my heart rejoices v7b, and I praise You in song.

To God be the glory, great things He has done; So loved He the world that He gave us His Son! Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the earth hear His voice; praise the Lord, praise the Lord, let the people rejoice.

You are the stronghold of salvation for Your anointed v8,9 so save Your people, bless Your possession (that would be me, my family, my church, and all true disciples), shepherd us. I know You will carry us forever.

Thank You, Lord for my salvation and give me the mind of Christ today; guard my heart and the love I have for You…be first, I am second; keep the truth of Your Word active within me, even when my mind roams to the world; give me wisdom when opportunities arise to share with others about Your love; reinforce my faith as protection against my enemy; and may Your Word, the Spirit's sword always, always be useful in my grasp. Like the song says: "prone to wander, Lord, I feel it; prone to leave the God I love." But I want to be second and always give You the preeminence, first place in my life.

Come quickly, Lord. The world is a mess; it needs a real Savior, and You're the only One.

Some Favorite 3rd Verses to Well Known Hymns

Here are some of my favorite all time verses to well known hymns. They just happen to be the third verses. You’ll remember the choruses that go with them.

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see; For 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died to pardon and sanctify me.

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing, sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in; That on that cross, my burden gladly bearing, He bled and died to take away my sin.

My sin, O the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin, not in part but the whole, was nailed to the cross and I bear it no more; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my soul!

Journal for April 27th…Music

5:44 AM

Psalm 27

The Lord is my light in a world of darkness v1 and despair; and while evil seems to get the upper hand close by and far away, the Lord is the stronghold of my life. I give You praise this morning, Father God - Savior Friend, for Your dependability and goodness toward me. I have asked one thing -- and everything else comes down to this really -- It is to dwell in the house of the Lord, gazing on Your beauty and to seek You v4,5. Heaven, the source of light and life is my destination…and all because of You!

I will sing and make music to the Lord v6…thank you, Lord, for the gift of music. I don't sing as well as some others, but my heart loves to lift a song to You during the day.

My Jesus, my Savior, Lord there is none like You; all of my days, I want to praise, the wonders of Your mighty love!

Then sings my soul, my Savior, God to Thee: How great Thou art, how great Thou art!

Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God almighty; Who was, and is, and is to come!

Holy Spirit, I only ask that You help me seek Your face today. Hear my voice v7 and be gracious to me -- not because of my merit but that of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, the risen Son of God. Show me Your way v11 as I wait for the Lord v13.

Lord, You have been good to me in so many ways. Thank You for my salvation--for letting the light of Your truth shine into my heart as a young boy. Thank You for my family--wife and children; for my mom and dad that introduced me to You. Thank You for church and true believers that want to put aside the worldliness and pettiness and grow in power and presence of Jesus Christ.

The world is a mess, Lord. Somehow I pray that our president and elected officials will start to make righteous choices that please You and let us continue to worship and serve You openly. So many believers around the world do not have that freedom.

Thank You, Lord for so many things… and I thank You for Heaven: first, because that is where You dwell, and secondly, that is my home, too…a new Heaven and a new Earth! I believe this. I really do.

Journal for April 26th…Level Ground

5:41 AM

Psalm 26

Father and Savior…the One who loves me more than I can imagine: Hear my prayers today, not because I have any merit of my own, but because You gave me standing in Your courts through the merit of Christ Jesus, Your Son.

Truly my foot stands on level ground v12 in a world that is upside down and out of balance. Your Word remains constant and true -- that is my level ground. So I will praise the Lord in the assemblies--among Your people. Encourage Your people today, Lord. Help my family and my church family to keep their eyes on You and the truth of Your Word.

Psalm 86

Teach me Your way, Lord v11 and I will do the best I can to live by Your truth. What I want, Lord, is an undivided mind that respects You more than it loves the world. I may disappoint You but I will praise You with all my heart v12. I pray that my life brings honor to Your Name, for Your faithful love for me is great v13 and more than once You have delivered my life from the depths of Sheol -- or at least what seemed like it to me. There are arrogant and ruthless people that attack me v14 and would be just as happy if I were dead and gone. Spirits of destruction are after me and my family and my church all the time…they are relentless. But You are faithful still.

Thank You Lord for my salvation; my family; my health; my ministry; my life; my church family…all of these are a gift from You. Not one thing good comes because I deserve it, it's all a matter of grace and goodness on Your part. That's why I pray today for my brothers and sisters that are suffering and living for You in tough places. The very mention of You could bring their death. It is Your blood that binds us together, for we all come to You the same way, through faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross. Praise the Lord!

Journal for April 25th…His Compassion

5:44 AM

Psalm 25

Father, I begin by acknowledging Your superiority over everything, over every creature, and over every person…especially me. You are compassionate v6, forgiving v11, gracious v16, full of goodness v7, and demonstrate Your faithful love v6 to me all the time. Do not remember the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways v7; I ask You, for the sake of all You did to and through Jesus for me, "forgive my sin, it is great." Only someone with Your great compassion could hear a prayer like this and tender such forgiveness.

You have things to say and show to me, and only to those who belong to You v14…reveal these things to me. Teach me Your paths today, and guide me in Your truth v5 because You, and You alone, are my salvation. I don't stand a chance in eternity without You -- without Your grace and unmerited mercy.

I thank You for Jesus, Your Son, and all that was accomplished for me, by Him on the cross. I look forward to Heaven, Lord, where worldliness, sin, and my own human desires are no longer a threat to our relationship. Truly free…that's what I'll be…truly free. Free to love You as I should and really desire to do; free to serve You as I should and really desire to do. The New Earth and Heaven look better all the time, Lord…and my finite abilities can't even begin to imagine a place without the pain, the sorrow, the sin, and the death we have now.

In the Name of Jesus Christ and through the power of His blood, please put a strong hedge of protection around my family today; and around my flock. We tend to stray and get distracted throughout the day, but protect us from our enemies and the spirits of destruction that are relentless. Thank You, too, for the Holy Spirit that lives in me. I am not a worthy temple, but I am a willing one. Be first. I am second.

Journal for April 22nd…Words of Destruction

5:43 AM

Psalm 52

Father, apparently nothing really is new under the sun. Even people in David's day loved to tell bad news about someone else. They "love any words that destroy" v4 and are eager to share harmful tidbits of information that hurt and damage others. And I'm talking about believers that do this! Your servant, David, called it "destructive behavior" v7. Forgive me, Father if I said anything hurtful or destructive about anyone to others. I know better.

Lord, Your love is faithful forever and ever v8, so I will praise You forever for what You have done. We caused the world to fall; we brought the sin that caused the world to be cursed. But You, Father, remain faithful and close by -- if we want You to be. And You gave us other people to share, grow, and love with. My family is like that; and church should be like that. We should all be able to say "in the presence of Your faithful people, I will put my hope in Your Name, for it is good." May our worship reflect the collective love we have for You.

Your Name is good. Being in Your presence is good. Knowing Your Messiah, Jesus Christ is very good. Being a man with failures and a nature so contrary to Yours, You still put me in ministry. Amazing. You have given me the ministry of reconciliation, not destruction. Forgive my sins and reconcile me to Yourself through the blood of Jesus. Then help me reconcile others to You, too. Reconciliation, not destructive words and actions.

Journal for April 21st…Knowing Him

5:41 AM

Psalm 21, 51

Father, what a wonderful way to begin my prayers, with the words You give me in the Bible. I could not express the thoughts of my heart any better than You have already given me. 51:5 I was guilty when I was born, so v 10 create a clean heart for me, Lord, and renew a steadfast spirit within me…restore the joy of Your salvation v12 and give me a willing spirit. Lord, if You would open my lips v15 then I will declare Your praise today. Yes, I will give You praise for Your magnificent righteousness and mercy.

Psalm 21…I know this, any victory that I experience is Your victory v5. You give blessings forever and cheer me with nothing less than the joy of Your presence v6. Your presence -- how great is the blessing of Your presence…that the Creator and sustainer (and Judge) of all that there is should even trouble Himself to have a relationship with me. How did I deserve this? I deserve this because, and only because, Jesus died and suffered grossly for me, in my place. You made it happen. Everything that was needed so You and I could have a relationship, You did it! You devised the plan and pulled it off! And I believe it!!

I am grateful that my family believes it, too. And I am grateful that there are people, friends of mine and co-church members that believe it, too. It is for these, my family, friends, and co-members that I pray in the Name of Jesus and the power of His blood that You, Father, would put a strong hedge of protection around us all today. The enemy, like a terrorist, is at war with us whether we know it or not. Help us/me to be vigilant and strong in the fray.

Give me the mind of Christ; help me react from the spirit, not emotions; may Your truth guide me; embolden me to witness should the opportunity arise; keep Your Word in my heart and mind; and increase my faith in You and Your promises; and, Lord, continue to move throughout the world in the lives of my fellow believers -- most I won't meet until Heaven -- that suffering persecution today.

We will continue to talk, Lord, throughout the day, so be real to me and fill me with Your Spirit. Thank You for Your Spirit.

Journal for April 20th…Desires

5:47 AM

Psalm 20

Father…let me praise You this morning for Your faithfulness. You are consistent in all You do -- and I know that is an understatement. We can be counted on for rebellion and selfishness, but You are faithful and so good to us. You even gave Your Son, Jesus, to pay for our sins. How unselfish is that?! Thank You for Your many gifts, but mostly for You.

What a prayer: May You the desires of my heart and fulfill my whole purpose v4. The problem with that is my "heart desires". I am not always sure that what my heart wants is pleasing to You. So first of all, help me desire what You desire. Make the desires of my heart consistent with Your will, Your character, Your plans. Then You can "fulfill my whole purpose." I want to know what Your purpose is for me.

Fulfill all my requests v5…as long as those requests are unselfish and are more interested in the Kingdom. You see how I struggle sometimes with knowing what my requests ought to be. That's why the desires of my heart should line up with Your desires.f

Thank You, Lord, for even caring what my heart desires and requests might be. Thank You for answering my prayers in ways that are best for Your Kingdom and for my life, not how I see things with my limited perspective. You are very gracious to me in that way.

In the Name of Jesus, who died and rose again, I pray for forgiveness and cleansing of sin today. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow! Hedge in and protect my family today, in the Name of Jesus Christ and the power of His blood; also my church family…all the kids, teens, and adults; give our elected officials and all the bureaucrats they appoint wisdom and an inclination toward righteousness.

You could vaporize me in a moment and take away all that matters to me, but instead, You have died for me and invited me to be with You. Then, on top of that, You have even allowed me to serve You! Amazing. Thank You for Your salvation…and for Your friendship.

What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear; what a privilege to carry everything to Him in prayer!

Journal for April 19th…Creation

5:42 AM

Psalm 19

Father, how majestic You are! Creation reveals You to mankind -- good and evil alike. All day long, and all night, the natural order shouts out "I am here". The heavens truly do declare the glory of God v1. The sun, clouds, the movement of nature are constantly saying that You exist and care for us. Nothing is hidden--You are not hidden v6.

And then, Your Word is so perfect that just reading it revives the soul v7. Sometimes I am slow to sit down and engage Your Word, but I am always glad that I did…even when it points out sins or failures that I have because it cleanses me, too. Only Your amazing Word could amplify sin then cleanse it, too. You truly are wonderful. This humble, redeemed human being wants to praise You this morning. Today, Lord, I pray that even the meditations of my heart -- that no one else hears -- will be acceptable to You v14. It takes a Redeemer like You to break sin's hold and bring a person into a relationship with His Creator.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, the risen Savior of all who believe, I pray for a hedge of protection around my family today; around my church family -- every adult and every child; and for the leaders of this country -- for their spiritual awakening to the truth of Your Word. It's revealed in the universe around them if they would only see it.

Journal for April 18th…Morning Praise

5:40 AM

Psalm 108

v1 Father, what a great psalm You've provided for a morning prayer: "I will wake up the dawn" with praise. And You, Lord certainly deserve praise and honor from all Your creation--and especially from one like me who You have saved with Your grace and mercy.

v1 "My heart is confident, God", but sometimes my mind is wary of circumstances. So I pray for guidance; I pray for protection; I pray for unity and resolution. The world is in chaos, but You said it would be. My church is under attack, but You said it would be. I, Your servant, am under attack, by You said I would be. My family is under attack, but along with everything else, You said it would be. I get tired in the battle sometimes, Lord, but I am confident in You. v12 "Give us aid against the foe, for human help is worthless." So true, Lord. The best efforts of people cannot thwart the spirits of destruction. Human help is worthless. What we need is You…Your presence…Your power…Your love and grace. We are spent.

As this week begins, fill me with Your Spirit. Don't just forgive my sins, but cleanse me from my sins, in the Name of Jesus the risen Lord, and in the power of His shed blood. I need and want Your understanding and guidance. v6 "Save with Your right hand and answer me so that those You love will be rescued."

Lord, I sing praise this morning for Your faithful love v4; and Your faithfulness (that doesn't depend upon mine); and I pray that Your glory v5 would be over the whole earth. Someday it will. Even know You have people all over the world living for You, even dying for You. So why is Christianity so difficult where I live without persecution? It's a fallen, cursed world, Lord. Thank You for coming into to and saving me. Your grace is truly amazing, and Your mercy/compassion is beyond my understanding.

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul; thank You, Lord, for making me whole; thank You, Lord for giving to me, Your great salvation so rich and free!

In my life, Lord, be glorified today…somehow.

Journal for April 15th…Armor

5:45 AM

Psalm 15, 45, 75

Father, I give You praise this morning for who You are…the Creator of all that is. From nothing You made everything, including me, and are the rightful Ruler over everything. I want You to be the rightful Ruler in my life today. I really do want to be second.

There are forces in the world, and some of them attack my family, friends, and Your Bride, that would hurt me and draw me from You. Some days there is joy in the serving; other days there is pain and confusion. Heaven sounds really good on days like that.

75:1 I give thanks to You, God, I give thanks to You, for Your Name is near. Thank You for being near. Forgive my sins and failures -- I can only ask that in Jesus' Name -- and fill me with Your Spirit today.

Thank You for my salvation and give me the mind of Christ. Guard my heart to defer to my first love, You. Increase my integrity and help me be led by Your truth. Use me as a witness somehow today, Lord, if You can use someone like me. Help me keep Your Word before me. And never let my faith slip…I will trust You, Lord to help me and guide me…I already trust You to save me forever. Now let me pray for my fellow believers. May they be strong today. The believers, the church members, that want to be Your followers. Don't let the world get them down and draw them away from following. I also pray for the believers that would cause your servant harm, and do harm to Your Bride in the process. Help me "forgive their trespasses, Lord" because You've forgiven so many of mine.

I pray that all Your people, especially the ones I have been given as friends and flock, will fulfill You command to love one another, as You have loved us. Thank You, Lord Jesus, for all You are to me -- and all You are going to be in Heaven: King of kings, Lord of lords!

Journal for April 14th…Foundation

5:40 AM

Psalm 14

Father, I would be forever lost without You and Your plan for redemption because I am included when Your Word says, "all have sinned" and "not one single person does good" v1. All means all. I will refrain from judging others, Lord, as if I'm in a position to do so, for I'm a part of this fallen world. I have to tell You, for You already know, that I am drawn to the world because I came from it. But now my heart truly wants to serve You. Deep down inside me there is a flame of belief.

I want to show the same mercy I have received toward others. I want to be gracious and forgiving, because I have been graced by You; forgiven by You. Yes, the fool says there is no God -- but there are Christians that act just foolish by living their lives as if there isn't one. Help me love the unlovable today. Bless my enemies, Lord. Save my adversaries from Your judgments -- or chastisements.

Psalm 104

Lord, v5, You establish the earth on its foundations; it will never be shaken. That's the way I want to be: established on Your foundation and never be shaken. Honestly, Lord Jesus, I get rattled but I try to maintain my composure for the sake of those around me. Thank You for the foundation of the gospel; the sure hope of Heaven; the indwelling of Your Spirit; Your Word that I can retreat to. Oh yes, You have blessed me and given me a foundation.

I also thank You for my family; for my ministry; for my health; for my friends who believe in me--I believe in them, too. We need each other: You, me, family and friends. Don't let destruction spirits come between the truly faithful.

Be praised today, Father! You are my Creator and my Savior. Your kindness is just as amazing as Your grace. Help me to love the way You love.

Journal for April 13th…His Generosity

5:45 AM

Psalm 13, 43

13:6 Father…without any doubt about Your love I want to praise You for Your generosity. You have been so good to me. Yes, there are adversities and conflicts, and they tend to rob me of the brightness in my eyes v3. But You are able to restore that brightness; You are still generous. I must thank You for my salvation--devised by Your genius; offered by Your grace; provided for through Your mercy. More than generous.

I thank You for my family, each and every member; I thank You for my ministry, letting me be useful to You; I thank You for my health, which is more valuable as time goes by; I thank You, too, for my church family.

43:3 I ask that Your light and Your truth will lead me into Your presence today. I must confess my sins so no barrier remains between us. Thank You for the access I have into Your presence today. This world needs You. I need You each step of my way.

Forgive those who trespass against me and sin against me. I pray that I would not grow bitter or sour toward others. May Your Word be the standard for their conduct and love. You told us to love one another, and with Your help, Lord, I want to show love…even to my detractors and those who don't want to follow You.

My sins grieve Your Spirit enough, but Your light and truth will lead me to Your mountain! Straight to You! Fill me with Your Spirit today -- even during the mundane work and unexciting times, as well as big decision times. Make Your Word speak to me as I study and read today.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, the One and Only true Savior, and in the power of His blood, please put a strong hedge of protection around my family, my church, and my friends.

Journal for April 12…Loyalty

5:48 AM

Psalm 12

v8 Worthless things, Lord, worthless things -- the world pursues, cheats for, lies for, and kills for worthless things. Forgive me, Father, for all the times I put worthless things first. Some worthless things are good, Lord…they are just not the best things, so in the big picture of eternity, they are worthless. It's not easy to give You pre-imminence in all things -- it goes against my human nature -- but in my spirit, in my heart, I want You to be first. I want to be second.

You know all my sins and the thoughts that run contrary to Your thoughts. Forgive my sins, and even better, cleanse me from my sins for the sake of Jesus and what He did for me on the cross. Fill me with Your Spirit and give me true wisdom.

v1 Loyalty is in short supply here on earth, Lord. You said "the loyal disappear" -- and that's true. People will turn their back on each other … on You! … in just a moment. And for what? Worthless things. I want to be loyal to You today, Lord; I want to be loyal to my family; and I want to be loyal to Your Bride, the church…my church.

Thank You for my life; for my salvation; for my health; for my family and my wife; for a ministry to serve You. Everything I have, am, and will be is in Your hands and is a blessing from You. Help me be loyal today to the One Who gave me so much. Thank You (such inadequate words). I am second.

Journal for April 11th

Psalm 11

v4 Lord, You are in Your holy temple…Praise Your Name for that! Your throne is in heaven, not here on earth…in heaven where it is out of reach of sinners; it is holy and untouched by the greed, meanness, and sin of earth; it is above and beyond my reach unless You make it possible for me to enter. And Your Word says that I should have boldness to come before Your throne through the blood of Christ--on the basis of what Jesus Christ has done.

In the Name of Jesus Christ, Your crucified and risen Son, and the power of His blood -- the One that died for my sins--I come into Your presence this morning confessing my sins and seeking Your pardon. Your grace, Father, is all I have to depend on. Go beyond forgiveness and pardon…please cleanse me from my sin. I know You can. Others will not see me as righteous, but I know You will … because of Jesus.

v5 You examine is all, the righteous and the wicked. I pray that when You examine me that You see the mercy and love of Jesus there. I have no other claim or merit before You but what He has already done for me.

Lord, this will be a busy week for me -- should You allow me to get certain things accomplished -- and I ask for Your assistance and guidance. I pray in the Name of Jesus that You would be a strong hedge of protection around my family today; and a hedge around my church family. Certain members are under attack and do some things invoking Your Name and Your will…even when it is contrary to what Your Word teaches already. Rebuke the forces of darkness away from us and give us spiritual wisdom.

May Jesus be glorified in some way in my life today; in my family today; in my church today.

Thank You, Lord, for saving my soul; thank You, Lord, for making me whole; thank You, Lord, for giving to me Thy great salvation so rich and free.

Journal for April 8th

5:48 AM

Psalm 68, 8

Lord, it is true that Your Name is most excellent throughout the whole earth. A lot of Names are shouted at us every day -- from celebrities, politicians, products and places -- but only Your Name is excellent…at least to me. It is the Name of Jesus that gets Your ear; it is in the Name of Jesus that I can ask and receive; it is the Name of Jesus that renders peace to my heart when whispered in prayer.

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…there's just something about that Name; Master, Savior, Jesus…like the frangrance after the rain; Jesus, Jesus, Jesus…let all heaven and earth proclaim: Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but there's something about that Name.

So, Heavenly Father, I come to You this morning in the Name of Jesus. Forgive my sins; strengthen me where I am weak; and give me Your wisdom and love…all for the sake of, and in the Name of, Jesus.

Journal for April 7th

5:37 AM

Psalm 67

Lord, I don't know where to begin with praise this morning. Mere words are inadequate to express how good and wonderful You are. Your word says "May God be gracious to us and bless us; look on us with favor Selah so that Your way may be known on earth, Your salvation among the nations." v1 You have certainly been gracious to me, Lord, and to those around me. And You have blessed me with undeserved blessings -- especially with the blessing of Your presence and peace. The only reason You could look on me with favor is that You have imputed to me the goodness and righteousness of Jesus…again, undeserved. But I truly pray that You would be known among the nations.

For example, in Japan, Lord, there are believers. Fill them; empower them; embolden them as they dig out from under all the heartache and hardship of the recent disasters. May they witness to others and share You incredible grace. Around the world where there are upheavals and revolutions please make Yourself known to the open-hearted and distressed peoples. Show Your grace to many.

Psalm 107

"Let them give thanks (those God has helped) to the Lord for His faithful love and His wonderful works for the human race." These words will be my words this morning, Lord. I give thanks to You for Your faithful love and wonderful works in me -- and what You've done for the whole human race. Can't people see that the fact that food grows up out of the ground is Your blessing; just like the air they breathe and the rain and sunshine. But the most wonderful "work" You've done for the human race happened when Jesus died for all our sins and then rose from the dead! Yes, I give You thanks for that, and may many believers around the world do the same.

Please, Lord, in the Name of Jesus Christ, the risen Savior, put a strong hedge of protection around my family; also around my church family. We are struggling through fallen world but somehow we found Jesus along the way. Thank You a million times for that; but now protect and guard us today. May we glorify You somehow today as You fill us with Your Spirit.

Journal for April 6th

5:43 AM

Psalm 66

v8 "Praise our God, you peoples, let the sound of His praise be heard." Lord, there are people that give You praise, even in this culture of death, violence and selfishness. There are still people all over the world, perhaps in the minority, that praise You. Please count me as one of them. I tend to go the way of the world -- it's my nature. But You saved me from myself, my sin, and eternity without You. For the plan of salvation I give You praise. It is an ingenious plan that only You could make happen. You are holy and great and good; no one but You could have worked the plan and make the plan work. Count me in the people from all over the world that praise You today.

"You let men ride over our heads" and we go through fire and water in this life v12; but You will bring us out to abundance. The world is not a happy place today; people are lost; people are abusing and misusing one another. Yet I have a Savior -- One who saves/rescues me from all this…maybe not now; maybe not today; but eventually I truly believe Your Word about eternity, Heaven, and being with You.

I pray for our president today and all of our leaders. May Godly wisdom somehow come over them. Won't You strengthen Your people and give us the courage to witness about Your goodness and glory. I bring my family and my church into Your presence this morning -- not that they aren't in You mind always. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Your crucified and risen Son, and the power of His blood to cleanse and defeat sin, I ask that You place a strong hedge of protection around them. Hedge us in and protect our hearts and homes and lives today. Thank You. Thank You so much for all You do…and will do.

Journal for April 5th

5:43 AM

Psalm 65

Lord, You have given me yet another day to serve You. So many people, including believers, are struggling so much that serving You gets lost in the fray. Don't let that happen to me. v1 "Praise is rightfully Yours, God…" And You are the One that hears prayers v2. It's true that iniquities overwhelm me v3. There's no point in pretending to be better than others or full of my own righteousness -- I have no righteousness except what You give me in Jesus.

You establish the mountains v6 so please establish me…establish Your church and people.

Lord, "You make east and west shout for joy" v8. I think of the voices all over the world that oppose You and Your people. Yet there are those who are joyful because I believe You have a remnant of believers everywhere. So in the east and the west there are shouts of joy because of You. Let me join the chorus today and praise You. Your kindness and goodness are for those, like me, who trust in You. Be praised somewhere -- everywhere -- today, just like You are in Heaven.

In the Name of Jesus and by the power of Your risen Son's blood, please put a hedge of protection around my family and my church today….around me, too. We need Your protection and care.

Thank You for so many good things You have given me -- all undeserved. Thank You for my salvation; my family; my ministry; my health. These gifts are from You; may they reflect Your glory today.

Journal for April 4th

5:44 AM

Psalm 34

v19 "Many adversities come to the one who is righteous, but the Lord delivers him from the all." v22 "The Lord redeems the life of His servants."

Father, You remind me that adversity is a part of being in the fallen world. Right now the lightening and thunder of a storm are flashing and rattling outside. The storm is over the homes of the saved and unsaved alike. It's a part of the natural order of things. But in Your gracious love and mercy You also remind me that You are still there and will ultimately deliver me through the storms. Thank You, Father for the way You care for me and watch out for me. I want to praise You for Your great goodness. You are so powerful, yet so gentle and kind. Why You love me I will never know; but how You love me is clear: You gave Jesus to die in my place. That makes me one of Yours because I believe it all the way.

Thank You for forgiving all my sins and weaknesses, but at the same time I ask You to fill me with Your Spirit and guide my steps today -- even the insignificant and small things would appreciate Your touch and input.

Psalm 64 v1 "God, hear my voice when I complain. Protect my life from the terror of the enemy." Satan, the evil one, is the ultimate terrorist. Protect me and my family and my church from his terroristic ways. And, I don't want to be a complainer, but when I do bring things to You, thank You in advance for hearing me. I need someone to talk to, and You're the best listener ever!

Be glorified somehow in my life today.

Journal for April 1

5:38 AM

Psalm 31, 91

I don’t know why Jesus love me; I don't why He cared; I don't know why He sacrificed His life; O, but I'm glad, so glad He did!

91:3 "He Himself will deliver You from the destructive plague." Lord, we're surrounded by destructive spirits. You know I'm preaching on that Sunday because on the road to the cross You came across destructive spirits. There are spirits that want to destroy my church, my family, my ministry, and all my relationships -- even the relationship I have with You. I can see it in the self-destructive ways people live. It's as if they are driven by an invisible enemy…which they are!

But I thank You, Lord, for the promise that You Yourself will deliver me v3. That Your faithfulness will be" a protective shield." Praise You, Father, for Your faithfulness and goodness.

You even indicate that there are angels You will give orders to concerning my protection v11,12. Here's the thing…help me be somewhat worthy of Your protection. I have little to offer Your Kingdom: only the gifts and abilities, love and grace that come from You.

I do pray, in the Name of Jesus Christ, and according to the power of His blood, that You would put a hedge of protection around my family; then around my church family. Without You, Lord, we are in a battle with no weapons and no chance to succeed.

To God be all the glory… and may You have the glory forever and ever. Thank You for Jesus; than You for my salvation; my family; my ministry; my health… my eternal home in Heaven.

The Truth About the “Ownership” of Palestine

Palestinians claim that Israel stole their land. No they didn’t!

After the Romans cleared out and decimated the mighty cities built by Jews like King Herod, Palestine was an arid, sparsely populated backwater that was eventually claimed (for land bridge reasons) by the Ottoman Empire, then by the British Empire. Jews have lived in the region continuously for well over 2,000 years. The British found themselves overseeing an indigenous population made up of Jews and Arabs-and sometimes Arab Jews. All were referred to as "Palestinians."

Ownership of the land was a patch work. Much of the land was owned by absentee landlords who lived in places like Egypt, and farmed by local Arab Palestinians. This may have made many Palestinians believe it was "their land," but sorry, that just wasn't the case. As the Zionist movement gained traction in the early 1900s, Jews around the world contributed to a fund to buy up tranches of land, and much of the land for the future Jewish state envisioned by the early Zionists was acquired this way.

Once again, the poor Arabs living on and farming the land may not have been happy to give up the land they lived on, but it was not "stolen from them," because they didn't own it to begin with. --Copied from Human Events

Journal Response to Ps 31

Psalm 31

v2 "Save me by Your righteousness." That's the only way it can work, Lord, for I have no righteousness of my own…no merit that I can point to. Jesus is the only righteousness I have; the only merit in my life. The thing good about me, is You. I give You praise today, Father, for Your goodness. It's Your kindness, Lord, that draws me to You. The world is hostile even on a "good" day. But in Your presence is protection and peace -- because that's the way You are.

On the other hand, my own sinfulness threatens to drain me of physical and spiritual strength….v10 "My strength has failed because of my sinfulness." Thank You for what Christ has done to effect my forgiveness and salvation.

v20 You hide me "in the protection of Your presence." I remember as a child running to my parent's bedroom during a storm, or when I thought something scary was lurking in the night. Just being in their room, their presence, was peace enough for me. You are my Father now. I want to come into Your room and be in Your presence. The storm may still rage, but I'm not afraid when I'm with You.

v15 "The course of my life is in Your power." Lord, I turn my decisions over to You. Help me understand the course You have set for me. Not just in the big decisions -- although today I really need Your direction on some big stuff -- but also in the small decisions. You don't have to wait for me to ask, please. Just be in control; take over.

From my Journal, March 30

5:43: AM

Mark 5; Psalm 30

Thank You, Father, that I woke up! I have another day to serve You. Help me, through Your Spirit to make the best of it. This is a "study" day, Lord and I'll need Your Spirit to illuminate Your Word to me. Give me the thoughts and words to understand and then communicate Your truth.

v5 Your anger lasts only for a moment, but Your favor lasts a lifetime. Your favor is far more than I ever deserve. And I can attest to the truth that, no matter what things may happen, You have favored me. Thank You for my salvation -- only through Your genius was a way made for me to be redeemed from an eternity without You. You have favored me with my wife; my children; my parents who led me to You in the first place; a ministry and the ability to teach Your truth to others; my health and disposition. Thank You, Lord.

Part of my Journal, March 29, 2011

5:37 AM

Mark 5, Psalm 29

29:2 "Give the Lord the glory due His Name; worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness." You cannot be separated, Lord, from the splendor of Your glory. Heaven is far too magnificent for me to grasp, but it is filled with You and Your splendor, Your glory. If I am to worship You, then I must be able to approach You somehow.

Thank You, Lord Jesus, for relinquishing Your glory long enough to come into my fallen world in order to save me. In the process, You have given me access to the Father. When I talk to Him in Your Name I am somehow in the presence of my God and Father.

"The Lord sits enthroned, King forever. The Lord gives His people strength." v10,11 One day everyone will acknowledge You as the King of kings. But today I do. I want You to be King in my life. Help me be second.

Part of my Journal, March 28

5:49 AM

Psalm 28

"Lord, I call to You; my Rock, do not be deaf to me." v1

"May the Lord be praised, for He has heard the sound of my pleading." v6

Lord, I call to You early in the morning and know You will hear me. You will hear me because You love me. I have no merit to bring to this relationship; You, and You alone, are good, holy, and kind.

You see me, however, as if I am righteous -- all because You chose to put on me the goodness and righteousness of Jesus. And what did He get in return? My ugliness, sin, and darkness. But His reward was resurrection and victory over death.

Your overwhelming grace is greater than my sin. I want to praise You for the grace and mercy You have extended to me. I just pray my life will reflect Your goodness in some way today. Thank You for hearing me. You don't have to.

From My Journal, March 26, 2011

Psalm 56:13 … God is the light of life.

There is no death in You, Lord. You are light. You are life. There is no light or life in the whole universe without Your expressed, deliberate operation. Light is not the nature of the world. It was found by You in darkness, and it was empty. You spoke and light shone on the earth. You spoke and life appeared.

You, Lord Jesus, are the Light and Life of me. I have no hope, no chance, no eternal prospects apart from the Light and Life You impart to me … because You love me. It's all a matter of grace. Pure grace.

What in the world is going on?

People are wondering what in the world is going on? Rebellions and uprisings; Islamic Jihad; earthquakes like the ones in Haiti and New Zealand; world wide seismic activity; rise in the frequency and intensity of violent crime; economic instability. All these events and activities have captured the attention of thinking Christians.

The truth is none of these are “signs” of the end. Jesus said when you see these things that the end is not yet.

Clearly, Jesus tipped us off to the two things, and only two things, that believers should be watching in the last days.

First, is that the Gospel will be taken to every nation. At least one person in every nation and people group will be introduced to the Gospel The death of 4 people killed by Somalian pirates is more of a sign of the end times than the uprisings in the middle east. Why? Those 4 people were attempting to take the Bible to the Far East. They were carrying out the command of Christ the “go in all nations.” That is relevant to end time prophecy.

Second, Jesus, and all of Scripture for that matter, told us that it’s all about Jerusalem. It’s not about world events or wars or pestilence. It’s about Jerusalem!

Jerusalem is the place the Messiah died for our sins; it’s where He rose from the dead; it’s place to which He will return; it’s the city He will replace with a whole New Jerusalem. It’s all about what happens to and in Jerusalem.

Many prophecy buffs try mark the time of Jesus’s return (against His specific command) from 1948, when the UN voted to establish the State of Israel. But that’s not as important as 1967 – when Israel reclaimed Jerusalem for the first time in 1,941 years.

Christians should be concerned with two things: 1. Taking the Gospel, and/or supporting the sending of the Gospel, to the world; 2. Praying for Jerusalem and the people of Israel.

What’s going on in the world is not nearly important as what is happening with the Gospel and with Jerusalem. What those two things.

Some Things We Never Forget

A representative to the U.S. House of Representatives is shot down, and others killed, at an otherwise happy, public event. There’s no rhyme or reason to it. Men, women and children who attended, and survived, will never forget the sights and sounds of that day. Some things you never forget.

I served in New York City as a chaplain immediately following the tragedy of 9-11. One assignment was to attend the funerals of first responders at St. Peter’s Cathedral. The grief on the faces of hundreds of firemen and policemen; the street lined with officers from all over the U.S. as the bagpipes played; the empty body-bags being carried on a fire truck; and the need for answers – and God – in every person’s eyes. Some things you never forget.

A seven year old first grade boy, doing what he does every other day of the week, was struck down as he crossed over to his house. The students on the school bus, the drivers waiting behind the bus while students disembarked, and the driver of the bus, and the driver of the pick up, were unwilling witnesses to this tragedy. Lives are changed forever in a flash, in a heartbeat, in just a moment’s time. Some things you never forget.

Where was God? If He is good, merciful, kind, and really loves us, where was God when all this happened? The answer: He was watching – and He was grieving – the same way He was watching and grieving the day His Son was being crucified on a cross. God’s Son died for our ultimate delivery from this earth of tears, pain, and death. I pray this is will one of those things we never forget.

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King, a Baptist preacher, stressed the viability of the Constitution of the U.S. and constantly urged Americans to seek the rights already guaranteed them therein. MLK knew that it was hard work, individual liberties, and constitutional government that would give all men equal opportunity and equal access to the pursuit of happiness.

There's a debate raging over which party MLK belonged to. The fact is, he stressed the tenets of Christianity and faith in Christ more than political parties. And with that being said, let's take a quick history lesson.

Most black voters in the 1950s and 60s were registered Republicans. In their segregated South, it was the democrats like Lester Maddox, Al Gore, Sr, and George Wallace that fought for segregation, "whites only" schools, and "separate but equal" public facilities. Even John F. Kennedy voted against the Civil Rights Act of 1957 when he was still a senator.

The Civil Rights Act of 1963 passed because of the Republican Senators that supported it. Al Gore's father voted against it. Senator Fulbright, Bill Clinton's hero, voted against it. Leading Democratic Senators across the board, mostly southerners, voted against it.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, a Republican appointed the Supreme Court justice that would lead the charge to overturn the Jim Crow Laws. It was Abraham Lincoln, a Republican, that maintained a strong hatred of slavery and racial injustice. A southern democrat killed him.

There were racist Republicans, too, like Senator Jesse Helms, but their voices never resonated among true constitutional conservatives or the Republican Party as a whole.

The debate goes back and forth about which party favors the minorities in this country. And there are racists in either camp. But it's the constitutional conservatives of BOTH parties that carried the day. Eventually, JFK came around and demonstrated conservative views. For example, he was pro-life and against big government handouts. Remember this: "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country." That should be a bumper sticker!

I say, let's drop the party labels of Democrat and Republican when we talk about the direction of our government. We should clarify whether a person is a constitutional conservative, or a constitutional revisionist. The framers of the Constitution were visionary, intelligent, God-fearing men. Most hated slavery but were unable to end slavery using the Constitution. The best they could do is include this: "all men are created equal, and are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; among which are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

They added "liberty" so that future courts and generations would be able to end the atrocity of slavery. They added "pursuit of happiness" because they knew it was not the government's place to guarantee happiness.

That's a fact that we learn from all the letters and journals written by these great men.

There's enough fault to go around in both parties. Let's stick to the Constitution as our one and only reference point for all our laws and government reach. Then, like President Washington said, we too will agree, that "no government can rightly rule without the Bible."

I, too, dream of a country where people are judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Thank MLK for that dream. I hope that dream will belong to all us one day.

With Christ in the School of Adversity

That’s right. Adversity is more than a painful experience or a challenge that threatens our peace and happiness. Besides being a “normal” part of living on this cursed planet, it is also a school where we learn a great many lessons. One lesson (and there will be a test later) is about how faithful we truly are. We also learn a lesson about the faithfulness and love of Jesus.

Sunday we will attend class with Jesus in the School of Adversity. Check out Matthew 14 then join us in person or via the internet as we attend class together.

Thoughts on Second Chances

"Lord, when I read about Peter slipping into the water I think of myself failing You. But then You didn't reject / discard Peter. You reached out and took him by the hand and drew Him to Yourself. Thank You for giving me one chance after another. I walk and sink; walk and sink; walk and sink. But each time You rescue me and draw me to Yourself…and then continue to work in and through my life. I just pray that when it's all said and done that You receive the glory and praise You deserve."

Sick or Not, God Remains Awesome

I've been sick all week. You know, a cold with sore throat, larygitis, coughing, sleepless nights. When your head feels kind of woosie it's hard to concentrate on important things. One thing is certain, no matter how I feel God is still the same -- He remains awesome.

One friend of mine had a clear MRI this week; another friend's brother succumbed to our enemy, death; another friend's house burned to the ground; but Jesus died to rescue us from this cursed earth. he remains awesome. Thank You, Father, for everything.

Used My Miracle Mouthwash

Well, I'm sick with a head cold, sore throat included. So, I made up a batch of my Miracle Mouthwash (actually got it from my doctor) and boy do I feel better!!
Try it. See the previous blog for the recipe. I forgot to put in the recipe to add a normal dose of Mylanta to the concoction.

MAGIC MOUTHWASH

My doctor gave me this formula last year when I was sick. It works!!

INGREDIENTS
One small tube of ORAJEL, CHERRY FLAVORED
Liquid BENEDRYL, CHERRY FLAVORED
Liquid MYLANTA, CHERRY FLAVORED

DIRECTIONS
Cut the back or bottom of the Orajel tube with scissors and empty the entire tube into a cup.
Add twice as much Benedryl as gel
And about 20cc of water (a spoon used to measure medicine or a cup that comes with Nyquil can be used to measure the water)
Mix the contents

APPLICATION
Take 5cc to 10cc by mouth, swish it around and gargle deeply, then swallow.
Repeat every 2-3 hours as needed.
The Orajel and Benedryl help numb the sore throat; the Mylanta is to make swallowing them easy on the stomach.

There you have it: Orajel, Benedryl, and Mylanta -- all cherry flavored. Don't make a face...try it.

READING THE BIBLE

I've added a new element to my blog. It's called "Faith Comes by Hearing" and makes the New Testament available to my viewers. You can listen to the Word in the English Standard Version (a good translation). So, go ahead. Take advantage and have a listen.

It's not about us, and it's not about NOW

Humans are physical by nature. God made us that way. But since we are under the Curse of sin we think in the NOW and have lost sight of eternity. But life is not about us, and it's not about NOW. Life, real life, is about Jesus Christ and what He has in store for believers.
The earth is temporary, but we invest all our emotional and mental stock in it. Truly, we give very little thought to what outweighs everything else -- the Lord and Heaven.
Worship, life, and love... it's not about us, and it's not about NOW.

Heaven just keeps getting better

I really enjoyed working on my message today about Heaven. We're studying the New Jerusalem and WOW, today I was into the River of Life, the Tree of Life (which is totally amazing!!), and even the natural wonders of the New Earth.
Think of it, mountains, trees, valleys, sunsets, waterfalls, precious stones, rivers and so much more. I wonder if the New Earth will have beautiful rings like Saturn does now; or maybe numerous moons. Why not? God always improves and advances on His work.
It's exciting; just plain exciting.

Heaven

Many of you know that I'm preaching a series on Heaven right now. In the process of reading, studying and preparing for the messages, Heaven has become even dearer and more desireable to me. Heaven is not a city floating in the clouds, or a ghostly place with ghostly inhabitants. It is a robust, full of life place where people enjoy success, work, pleasure, fun and fellowship.
Maybe all of us should be pre0ccupied with Heaven. It's our home, our future, and the place where our Savior and loved ones are.
The series can be seen on our website at www.gracekaufman.org or ordered and viewed on DVD.
I wonder what it would be like to place catch with Jesus. I always wanted to surf...I think I'll get my chance, if I want it. Sound weird? Maybe. Maybe not.

I'm not a Republican, I just seem vote Republican

Someone asked me about this the other day, and in today's political climate, I thought I'd exercise my freedom of expression (while I still have it) and answer: "Are you a Democrat or Republican?"
Sure, I've voted for Democratic candidates before when what they stood for mattered to me. But that was a long time ago. It seems I only vote for Republicans lately. But I do know some good public servants today that are Democrats on the local level.
You see, I'm a conservative. I have certain beliefs and values. I believe in a small federal government and that it's the role of the federal government to protect the homeland "from enemies, foreign and domestic", not regulate toothpaste, which medical treatment I can recieve, car emissions, nativity scenes, religious expression or free enterprise. I believe that less taxes stimulate the economy, not more taxes.
I also believe in the sanctify of human life. I belief God created human beings and our "abortion on demand" policies, and "abortion for convenience", tells God we think He made a mistake. It's like telling God that His crowning creation is disposable!!
I believe that our nation was founded on certain Judeo-Christian principles that will keep us strong, or only lead to our destruction if we abandon them.
I vote for candidates that hold to these and other conservative principles. And it seems that Republican candidates tend to hold to these principles more than Democrats. I'm open to correction if I'm wrong.
So, when I vote for conservatives with biblical foundations, more often than not they tend to be Republicans.
I think I'll join the Tea Party, however. I think the next time there's a Tea Party gathering around here you might find me there.
Bottom line? I belong to a set of principles, not a political party. So, I vote for Life. If you have to pick a single issue, make it Life. If anyone thinks unborn life is cheap and disposable, they're going to think your life is cheap and disposable, too!

Is That All There Is?

Do you remember that song by Peggy Lee many years ago? She always expected the best and most exciting things to happen, and when they did, they weren't so great.
Why anyone loves this world with all its temptations, plagues, pain, troubles, adversity, and calamity is beyond me. Yet, even with so many miseries, one on top of the other, there are people who would love this world and do all they can to preserve it... to stay here!!
Don't get me wrong, I am the last person to advocate something like suicide -- that is never the answer. Never. But I am amazed sometimes at the pain and agony people will put themselves through so they can continue to suffer pain and agony.
It's always right to preserve life and give it the respect and protection it deserves. But we believers often lose sight of just how temporary and insignificant this "vapor" of a life is. In the vast configuration of things, God created us for so much more!
Okay, let's live on earth; let's work together for God's Kingdom; let's live in harmony in Christ's Church; let's try to preserve and defend life... but let's keep our eyes on the BIG PRIZE. The best isn't here on earth, it's what comes next that is most significant.
This isn't all there is!!

Heavenly Music!

There are certainly different kinds of music that is a part of the worship scene. In America we think that music is limited to what we call traditional, contemporary, southern gospel, or black gospel. Of course, in Africa or Indonesia they never heard of any of those styles of music. As a matter of fact, some places use drums as the driving instrument, and rythym, not melody as the main factor. Southern Gospel would scare them to death and Contemporary/Traditional music would be offensive.
Is there a best style of worship and best kind of worship music. The answer is YES!
The best style, in my humble opinion, is whichever style draws the most number of people together at one time for praising God. In some cultures that would be Black Gospel with the creative organ stylings that mark that sound. In other cultures it would drums and bamboo sticks. While in others it might be guitars, flutes, or bagpipes.
I like what Greg Laurie said in a newsletter someone sent me today: "Music is not an art form, it's a heart form."
There you have it. Music is our heart response to our Creator and Savior. If we can only get our personal preferences past the style, and unite around the words, then God would truly be glorified. Now, that's heavenly music!!

What if things go wrong?

That's a loaded question. We already know that things will go wrong. It's not because Obama is the president; or the Dems hold congress; or that terrorists are out to kill us; or that the economy and the dollar are heading down the proverbial toilet. Those are all symptoms of a bigger problem.
We live in a dimension of darkness and hardship. It's about time we face it... this is not a world conducive to the welfare of humanity.
But wait! It wasn't always that way. It was once an environment that was fully compliant with, and in unity with, the needs of human beings. It was a paradise; a utopia. But alas, Sin and Satan ruined it. Don't despair. Everything God is doing has one purpose, one intent, and only one outcome: the removal of Sin, the demise of Satan, and the renewal of Paradise!
What if things go wrong? Keep your compass calibrated toward God. He's the eventual winner!

Hang on, 2010 could be quite a ride!!

It would be possible to list a lot of bad things that could happen in 2010... things related to terrorism, accidents, economic woes, higher taxes, hurricanes, and, well, you get the idea.
On the other hand, everything that happens -- and I mean everything -- moves history closer to God's ultimate purpose. The fact is, Christians wouldn't be so depressed if they understood the undercurrent of God's activity. And, as I always say, "with Christ the best is always yet to come." Our best days are ahead of us!
So lets hang on together and ride this out. God is in it...whatever it is.

HAVE A CIGARETTE...PLEASE!

I remember the good ol' days with good ol' fashioned sins. I remember when smoking a cigarette was as close to devil worship as you could get. You were a "good Christian" if you didn't smoke, didn't cuss, didn't drink, didn't gamble and didn't dance. Oh, and I remember that in some church circles you weren't allowed to have "mixed bathing". Do you know what mixed bathing is? It's when boys and girls swim in the same pool or on the same beach. You could make certain church people freak out by showing up without a tie!
Today Christians are smoking joints (marijuana), shooting up drugs, cutting themselves, having online sex, getting abortions, beating their spouses and children, abandoning all standards of decency, and experimenting with homosexuality. This is not to mention the acceptable behaviors of slaughtering other reputations with gossip, splitting churches with power plays that match those of the corporate world, and stealing from God with lousy giving.
Between you and me, the next time I see a Christian have a cigarette, I'll just assume they're engaging in that "sin" to avoid something worse like getting high, cutting themselves, or beating up on someone.
Please, have a cigarette. You won't hear a sermon from me.

CHRISTIANS CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS IN FEAR

That's one of the stories you'll find on the FoxNews website today. In Pakistan there are believers living in a tent city because they were burned out of their homes last Christmas. This year, they've been warned that they will be burned alive inside their tents!
Why? Because they will not deny their faith in Jesus Christ!
So if you think the Christmas season is stress for you, just remember your brothers and sisters living (for how long?) in Pakistan, China, North Korea, Iran, Iraq, Indonesia, and many other places where faith in Christ is not welcomed....not even tolerated.
Hmmm. That's starting to sound a lot like places in the U.S.

Something Better than a White Christmas

"Come, let's discuss this," says the Lord, "though your sins are like scarlett they be as white as snow..."
You can dream of a white Christmas -- and I used to have plenty of Christmastime snow when I lived in Connecticut -- but an even greater reality is to dream of a place where the people are clean and white like snow. It's a real place called New Earth. (More on that later).
White Christmases will melt and become a memory. But when God cleanses your sins, you are truly whiter than snow.
The pigment used to make fabrics red or purple in the old days was like a permanent dye. If you got it on your hands it wouldn't come off. You were literally, "red-handed." But God says that even though our sins are that way -- permanent and indelible -- He is capable of cleansing us completely. And it's all because of the scarlett and crimson flow that came from the Messiah's sacrifice.
I think that's better than a white Christmas.

Twinkle, twinkle little star

"Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are?"
And it's a good thing to wonder what that star is. It's probably not so little. It's probably 10, 100, or 1,000 times the size of earth. We just can't always tell by looking at stars from a distance just how big they are; how many moons they have; or what they're made of.
God is that way...don't underestimate Him just because He looks little to you. The fact is, He's a lot bigger than you can imagine. And the closer you get, the more you'll come to appreciate Him.
The magi appreciated the stars and that appreciation for God's creation helped them comprehend God's signs. It was a long trip, but they made it into the presence of deity!
It may seem like a long trip to you, but follow the signs God gives you and you'll find yourself in the presence of deity eventually.

A Person Can Only Take So Much Christmas

Have you been to the mall lately? It's a madhouse!! People pressed for time and short on money have everything on there mind but the reason for Christmas. You can only take so much.
And have you watched the news lately? Christmas is being dissed by the mainstream media and Christians are being ridiculed for wanting a simple manger scene displayed in public. The nerve of those Christians! You can only take so much Christmas.
Have you seen the Santas lately? I mean, they're everywhere. There's more Santas in Dallas County than in the skies of Bethlehem 2000 years ago. A person can only take so much.
But then, when we remember that Christmas is about Immanuel -- God actually being with us -- it helps us see that He loves us. But God was with us for a reason: thogive His life as a ransom for us. Now we know HOW MUCH God loves us.
A person can only take so much of Christmas -- but can never get enough of Christ!

How do you know where God would have you serve?

We are surrounded by lost and needy people...on every level. It can overwhelm the person of good will. Where do we start? How do we meet all these needs? How do we choose who to help?
First, we must remember that Jesus did not help everyone in Palestine. He didn't raise all the dead people in Bethany's local cemetary. Only Lazarus. And He didn't return life to every child that died in Israel. Only Jarius' daughter and the widow's son. With all those needs around Him, and with the eternal power of the One and Only Son of God, why didn't He just fix everything? He could have...but He didn't.
Seeing a need is not the invitation to get involved. It is where God is at work, in the midst of these needs, that we should get involved. God isn't working on every person, every place, all the time. He is at work in the lives of specific people, at certain places, at any give time. If we are close enough to Him -- where He has our ear -- He will reveal where He is at work and invite us join in.
It's not up to us to choose where and when we'll serve! And frankly, that's a relief.
"Lord, show me where YOU are at work today and invite me to join in."

In Every Life a Little Rain Must Fall

I could wax philosophical and compare these days of rain with life in general. You know, there are days of sunshine, rain, even days that are partly cloudy with intermitent rays of sunshine coming through. Days and days of rain tend to get tiring. Right?
Well, the truth is, the sun is shining full bore in all its glory! People leaving DFW in a plane will rise above the bleak clouds and see the sun as bright as ever. Whether we see it on the ground or not, the sun is still up there -- somewhere -- shining as usual.
In our darkest days (I'm talking about life now) there is a God that is still reigning, ruling and shining in heaven. He is still worthy of praise and glory. Nothing about His character or substance has changed at all. Like the sun, He is above our storm maintaining His place in the universe and in heaven.
Yes, in every life a little (or a lot) rain must fall. But thank God this is not our end. These rainy days will end, and so will this life. This life will give way to an eternal life in the presence of God. "It will be worth it all, when we see Jesus; it will be worth it all, when we see Him."
Hang in there. The rain does stop...eventually.

Story Time with 'Mr. D"

The following article, written by Khindra Kent, that should appear soon in our local paper:

Dr. Darril Deaton is the Lead Pastor at Grace Fellowship Church but once a month “Mr. D” comes to Helen Edwards Early Childhood Center to visit with the students. He brings with him value building stories and fun characters that really hit home with the kindergarteners he speaks to. “The students love seeing Mr. D. They look forward to his visits and really gain valuable life lessons from the stories he tells,” said Mrs. Kent.

“He is a positive male role model that the children can look up to,” added Mrs. Havas. Mrs. Dawson commented, “I love how the stories are interactive. He always has a repeated word or phrase in the story so the children can participate.”

The stories he tells cannot be found in any book. Mr. D tells stories that he creates on his own about characters the kids can relate to, like Mean Margie who doesn’t have any friends because she bullies everyone and Billy who doesn’t like the rules. His story telling style keeps the students involved, and when the tale has been spun and it’s time for him to go the children have learned a priceless lesson.

Before coming to the school, Mr. D asks the teachers what kind of lesson they need. A suggestion from Mrs. Gillenwater to have a lesson about the student’s need to always be first inspired ‘Me First Mikey’. Me First Mikey always insisted on being first at everything, but soon he realized that he had no friends because he didn’t share or take turns. Mikey was lonely so he changed his ways and started saying ‘You First’. Mikey made many new friends and realized that being nice to others was much more fun than being first at everything.

So if you ever hear a kindergartener from Helen Edwards talk about Tattletale Timmy, Lazy Larry, Friendly Freddie or Super Sally you will know that Mr. D has been spinning another yarn that perhaps has made an impact on their life in a positive way.
